Sony Announces ELF-MN1, a 6-Inch Glasses-Free Spatial Reality Display Launching in December for Under $350

In brief

Sony has unveiled the ELF-MN1, a 6-inch glasses-free stereoscopic display launching in Japan on December 11, 2026 at an estimated retail price of approximately ¥54,000, or around $340. The device uses a third-generation infrared eye-tracking sensor and a micro-optical lens array to render 3D content without any headset or eyewear, and it connects to compatible smartphones and Windows PCs via a single USB-C cable. At 300 grams and desk-sized, the ELF-MN1 enters a price category well below spatial headsets and well below Sony's own 27-inch ELF-SR2 professional display, which carries an estimated retail price of roughly ¥550,000.

The Device

Sony announced the ELF-MN1 on October 28, 2026. The display measures 77 by 154 by 94.5 millimeters, weighs approximately 300 grams without accessories, and sits on a compact acrylic stand.

The panel is an LCD rated at 470 nits maximum brightness, a 1,350:1 contrast ratio, and 403 pixels per inch. Sony describes that pixel density as the highest in its Spatial Reality Display lineup. The native panel resolution is 1,080 by 2,160 pixels at 60Hz, and the micro-optical lens splits that across two viewpoints to form the stereoscopic image. The USB-C input accepts a signal up to 4K60P.

Built-in 1-watt stereo speakers and a microphone are included. The box ships with a 1-meter USB-C cable; an AC adapter is sold separately.

How It Works

The ELF-MN1 uses a third-generation infrared eye-recognition sensor to track the viewer's pupil positions in real time. The sensor maintains that lock in dim environments where earlier camera-based systems struggled. Based on the tracked eye positions, the display generates a stereoscopic image adjusted for the current viewing angle.

A micro-optical lens array presents distinct views to each eye, creating depth without any glasses. The effective zone spans 30 to 80 centimeters from the display and up to 25 degrees off-center. It's a single-viewer device: anyone outside the tracked position sees a distorted image, and Sony says simultaneous multi-viewer use isn't supported.

Compatible Devices and Content

The ELF-MN1 connects exclusively over USB-C with DisplayPort Alternate Mode. Compatible smartphones include iPhone 15 and later, Samsung Galaxy S23 and later, Google Pixel 10 and 11, and Sony Xperia 1 V and later. Desktop users need Windows 11 with a 6-core Intel Core i5 or equivalent, an NVIDIA RTX 2070 Super or better GPU, and at least 16 GB of RAM.

The display launches with support for Gugenka's HoloModel service, which distributes officially licensed digital figure content. Gugenka CEO Masafumi Mikami said the partnership moves the company's goal of "everyday life with your favorite character by your side" closer to everyday reality. Sony also plans a developer SDK targeting Unity and OpenXR, opening the hardware to custom spatial applications beyond the HoloModel catalog.

A New Price Tier

Sony's Spatial Reality Display line has until now aimed squarely at professional workflows. The ELF-SR1 launched in 2020 as a 15.6-inch device for industrial and game development use. The ELF-SR2, a 27-inch 4K panel that arrived in 2023, carries an estimated retail price of roughly ¥550,000 and has been sold through professional AV channels to product designers and surgeons.

The ELF-MN1 arrives at approximately one-tenth of that price and adds smartphone connectivity that neither earlier model offered. Public demonstrations are scheduled for November 20, 2026, at Sony Store locations in Ginza and Nagoya ahead of the December 11 retail release. International availability has not been announced.
