Siemens and Humanoid Deploy Autonomous Robot in Live Factory, Hitting 90% Pick-and-Place Accuracy

The Trial

Siemens and UK-based startup Humanoid ran a two-phase proof of concept at Siemens' electronics factory in Erlangen, Germany, and announced its completion in January 2026. Phase one built a physical replica of the work environment at Humanoid's facility to iterate on the robot's behavior before any on-site deployment. Phase two put the HMND 01 Alpha on the live factory floor for two weeks.

The task was unglamorous by design: pick totes from storage stacks, transport them across the floor, and place them on conveyor belts at designated handover points for human workers. The robot handled two different tote sizes and operated alongside autonomous guided vehicles and existing machinery without a dedicated safety perimeter.

By the end of the trial, the HMND 01 Alpha had hit 60 container moves per hour, sustained 30-plus-minute continuous autonomous runs, and finished full shifts exceeding 8 hours of uninterrupted uptime with a pick-and-place success rate above 90%.

The Robot

The HMND 01 Alpha stands 220 centimeters tall on a wheeled base capable of roughly 4.5 mph. It carries a humanoid upper body with 29 active degrees of freedom, 360-degree RGB cameras, dual depth sensors, and enough bimanual strength to handle up to 33 pounds. Vertical reach extends to 2 meters with 60-centimeter shelf-depth access.

Humanoid's proprietary KinetIQ framework handles perception, reasoning, and manipulation policy. For compute, the platform runs NVIDIA Jetson Thor at the edge, trained using NVIDIA Isaac Sim for simulation and NVIDIA Isaac Lab for reinforcement learning. The simulation-first design compressed prototype development from the industry-standard 18-to-24 months down to 7 months.

On the factory-systems side, Siemens' Xcelerator portfolio provided the operational backbone: digital twins, AI-enabled perception layers, PLC-to-robot interfaces, fleet management, and industrial network connectivity. The robot exchanged data with production systems in real time throughout the trial.

What the Companies Said

Deepu Talla, NVIDIA's VP of robotics and edge AI, described the deployment as "paving the way for humanoid robots meeting real production targets on a live factory floor." Humanoid CEO Artem Sokolov called the result proof that "humanoid robots are ready for real-world industrial deployment." Stephan Schlauss, Siemens' global head of manufacturing motion control, said the company is "tackling production automation, discovering new opportunities for Siemens, and are eager to advance this promising technology."

The formal partnership announcement came at Hannover Messe on April 16, 2026. Humanoid reported a backlog of roughly 30,000 pre-orders at that point, with its Beta-generation hardware targeted for Q4 2026.

Where This Fits

The Erlangen trial sits at the front of a rapidly expanding deployment pipeline for Humanoid. The company announced a separate proof of concept with Bosch in March 2026, where HMND 01 robots handled five box sizes across multiple footprints and weights at a Bosch facility in Bühl, Germany. Bosch has since signed on as Humanoid's contract manufacturer for European production.

The larger commercial commitment came from Schaeffler in a binding phased agreement to deploy a four-digit number of wheeled units across Schaeffler's global facilities by 2032. Initial systems are scheduled to go live before the end of 2026 at Herzogenaurach and Schweinfurt. Humanoid operates on a robot-as-a-service model, bundling fleet management software, maintenance, 24/7 technical support, and ongoing performance updates into the contract.

In July 2026, Humanoid closed a $152 million Series A, reaching a $1.35 billion post-money valuation and becoming Europe's first pure-play humanoid robotics unicorn.

The Industrial Read

What separates the Erlangen result from earlier humanoid demonstrations is the methodology. Most prior trials ran in purpose-built environments, on pre-positioned objects, with controlled lighting and no co-workers. The Siemens deployment used a live electronics factory, inconsistently placed totes, real-time coordination with human operators and automated vehicles, and a sustained-shift performance standard rather than a highlight-reel clip count.

The 90% pick-and-place rate over an 8-hour shift is the metric that industrial engineers will scrutinize most closely. A 10% failure rate in a tote-handling role is still operationally significant, and Humanoid has been explicit that the Erlangen result is a validated starting point rather than a finished product. The upcoming Schaeffler rollout, with its structured beta, gamma, and mass-production phases, will be the next test of whether those numbers hold at scale.

For industrial buyers weighing whether physical AI has moved from research category to procurement category, Erlangen is the most credible data point yet.
