PACK EXPO International 2026 Opens With Four Days of Packaging Automation Showcases

In brief

PACK EXPO International runs October 18-21, 2026, at McCormick Place in Chicago, drawing an expected 48,000 professionals to 1.3 million net square feet of live machinery and technology demonstrations. Organized by PMMI, The Association for Packaging and Processing Technologies, the show spans more than 40 vertical markets, from food and beverage to pharmaceuticals and logistics. The four-day program pairs the exhibit floor with more than 150 free educational sessions covering AI adoption, robotics deployment, labor strategy, and sustainability compliance.

The Show

PMMI, The Association for Packaging and Processing Technologies, positions PACK EXPO International as the premier packaging and processing event in North America, a claim it can support with numbers. More than 2,600 exhibitors will fill 1.3 million net square feet at McCormick Place, and organizers project 48,000 professionals through the doors across the 4-day run.

The show runs on a biennial cadence, which means it arrives carrying 2 years of compressed industry change. Laura Thompson, PMMI's VP of Trade Shows, put it directly: "In the two years since our last show, trends like AI, robotics, and automation have taken off and become prominent in the industry."

The Technology Agenda

Artificial intelligence has moved well past proof-of-concept in packaging operations. PMMI's February 2026 white paper, "Building an AI Advantage in Packaging Equipment," tracks adoption across 5 application areas: knowledge transfer, machine vision, predictive maintenance, regulatory compliance, and data transparency. Solutions have become consistently more affordable, and companies are shifting from isolated pilot projects to everyday production use.

Robotics has followed a parallel path. Case packing, palletizing, and pick-and-place are now the most widely adopted categories, with vision-guided systems drawing particular interest across food, pharmaceutical, and logistics verticals. The Innovation Stage will host a dedicated session on "The Latest Trends in Robotics in the United States," and live robot demonstrations will run across the exhibit floor throughout the event.

Labor and Flexibility

Workforce pressure runs underneath most of the automation conversation at the show. PMMI's 2025 Inside the Workforce Gap report identifies the shortage of skilled technical workers as one of the most significant barriers facing manufacturers today. The session "From Labor Shortages to Line Stability: End-of-Line Automation Strategies for Manufacturers" speaks to that directly, giving plant engineers concrete approaches to reducing manual dependency without disrupting existing line configurations.

Packaging format flexibility sits alongside labor as a recurring buyer priority. Manufacturers are pressing for systems that support faster changeovers, shorter production runs, and greater SKU variability. Flexible formats including pouches, flow wraps, and stick packs have gained steady market share, and the machinery serving them has to accommodate the full range.

The Learning Program

More than 150 free sessions span 5 dedicated show-floor destinations. The Innovation Stage covers industrial automation connectivity and AI-driven supply chain planning. The Food and Beverage Processing Innovation Stage addresses robotic vision systems, food safety protocols, and plant operations. The Reusable Packaging Learning Center runs sessions on circular economy integration and pharmaceutical packaging innovation.

PMMI has added several navigational features to help buyers use the floor time well. Discovery Tours offer expert-led routes through relevant exhibit clusters. The PACK EXPO Solutions Finder, an AI-powered tool, matches buyer requirements to exhibitor capabilities. A dedicated SMB FastTrack program flags sessions and exhibitors suited to small and mid-size operations.

Around the Show

Beckhoff Automation sponsors the Young Professionals Network reception on October 18. Rockwell Automation sponsors the PACK gives BACK concert on October 19, headlined by Third Eye Blind. The Women's Leadership Network Breakfast on October 20 features retired Air Force Colonel Nicole Malachowski as keynote speaker. A Vision 2030 forum rounds out the schedule for senior executives and CPG leaders.
