Meta Abandons Headset-First Strategy, Bets on Neural-Wristband AR Glasses for Daily Wear
Meta's launch of Ray-Ban Meta Display and Oakley Vanguard, paired with a gesture-control Neural Band, signals the market leader is conceding immersion to Apple and betting the consumer XR race on wearability and utility.

In brief
At Connect 2025, Meta skipped a new headset entirely and unveiled three glasses products, including a $799 display model controlled by an EMG wristband that reads hand gestures. With 7 million units sold across the Ray-Ban and Oakley lines in 2025 alone, the company is building a platform around daily wearability. The pivot leaves Apple holding the immersive-headset ground while Meta chases the far larger market of people who'll wear a device all day.
The Event That Had No Headset
Meta's Connect 2025 keynote on September 17 ran through three distinct glasses products and a Neural Band. There was no new Quest.
That absence was the message. CEO Mark Zuckerberg has argued publicly that glasses occupy the same cultural moment as the smartphone's arrival: "It felt pretty clear that in five years or whatever, all of the flip phones were going to be smartphones, and that's basically how I feel about glasses today." He's betting consumer computing moves to the face, not deeper into a headset.
Ray-Ban Meta Display: A Screen You'll Actually Wear
The flagship product is the Ray-Ban Meta Display, shipping September 30 at $799. The price includes both the glasses and the Neural Band wristband. The glasses weigh 69 grams and carry a full-color display in the right lens, a 6-hour mixed-use battery, and 30 total hours with the included charging case.
The display doesn't fill your visual field. It sits off to the side, a deliberate restraint that keeps the glasses usable while you're walking, driving, or talking to someone. Meta AI can deliver navigation prompts, live captions, real-time translation, and WhatsApp messaging through that overlay.
On day one, the glasses launched in black and sand. International expansion to Canada, France, Italy, and the UK was planned for early 2026, though Meta paused that rollout at CES citing unprecedented US demand and waitlists that extended into the new year.
The Neural Band: Input Off the Glasses
Control rides on the Meta Neural Band, an EMG wristband worn like a watch. It reads surface electromyography signals from the muscles in your wrist, translating subtle finger movements into scroll, select, and toggle commands for the glasses. Battery life runs up to 18 hours, the band carries an IPX7 water rating, and it comes in three sizes.
The wristband ships built from Vectran, a material that saw prior use in Mars rover landing pads. The harder engineering argument is computational: pushing input to the wrist lets Meta keep the glasses frame thin and gives the company an independent hardware layer it can iterate without redesigning eyewear.
Meta VP of Wearables Alex Himel described the ambition at CES 2026, where the company showed the Neural Band controlling a Garmin in-car infotainment system via pinch and swipe gestures: "Meta Neural Band and its EMG technology could be the best way to control any device."
The January CES updates added two Neural Band capabilities. Virtual handwriting recognition lets users trace letters on any surface to compose WhatsApp and Messenger messages. A teleprompter mode lets wearers scroll prepared remarks through the display lens while speaking. Both features treat the glasses and band as a paired daily-wear system rather than a product pair you put on for a task.
Oakley Vanguard: A Second Form Factor for Athletes
Two days before the Display announcement, Meta and Oakley unveiled the Vanguard, a $499 sport glasses platform aimed at cyclists, runners, and snowboarders. It shipped October 21, 2025.
The Vanguard ditches the dual-corner cameras that defined prior Meta glasses in favor of a single centered 12-megapixel lens with a 122-degree field of view and 3K video capture. The frame is IP67 rated for dust and water, weighs 66 grams, and runs 9 hours on battery with another 36 from the charging case.
Garmin and Strava integrations let athletes query real-time heart rate and pace via voice, and an Autocapture feature cuts short video clips automatically when a distance milestone or performance spike fires. The buttons sit underneath the frame so cyclists can wear helmets without interference.
Meta positioned the Vanguard through what it calls "Athletic Intelligence," a term the company is threading through its sports-hardware framing. EssilorLuxottica manufactures both the Vanguard and the Display, and the production relationship is deepening: Bloomberg reported that Meta and EssilorLuxottica were discussing doubling output to at least 20 million units by year-end to meet demand.
The Commercial Backdrop
The glasses pivot is working commercially. EssilorLuxottica disclosed in its Q4 2025 earnings that the two companies sold 7 million Ray-Ban and Oakley Meta units in 2025, more than triple 2024 volume. The company's fourth-quarter revenue hit 7.6 billion euros, surging 18 percent, with AI-powered glasses running at triple-digit growth rates in North America.
Zuckerberg described the category during Meta's Q1 2026 earnings call as "one of the fastest growing categories of consumer electronics ever." Daily usage of the glasses tripled year-over-year, per that same call.
Apple's path diverged. The Vision Pro, at $3,499 and 650 grams, sold roughly 600,000 units total before Apple reportedly cut production and slashed marketing spend by as much as 95 percent heading into 2025. Apple is now reportedly working on glasses without a display as a first step, a format closer to the original Ray-Ban Meta than to anything in the Vision Pro line.
What the Wristband Strategy Means Long Term
Meta's Orion prototype, shown publicly at Connect 2024, remains years away from consumer pricing. Orion features silicon-carbide waveguides, a 70-degree field of view, and on-device spatial computing. Its manufacturing cost runs in the high thousands per unit. The Neural Band is already shipping and already paired with three glasses form factors; it's the company's bet on input architecture that survives the transition to true AR optics.
The glasses-plus-wristband pairing solves a problem that killed earlier wearables: there's no obvious way to control something on your face without drawing your phone out. An EMG band that reads intention from wrist muscle signals and responds in milliseconds lets the glasses disappear into normal behavior. You don't reach for anything.
Whether that's enough to define a platform depends on what comes next. Meta's Connect 2026 runs September 23-24, with four additional glasses models reportedly in the pipeline under codenames including Modelo, Luna, and Bellini. The Neural Band's CES expansion into automotive and accessibility control suggests Meta intends it as a platform-level input layer, not a glasses-specific peripheral.
The headset isn't dead. Meta's Quest line still leads the VR market with roughly 80 percent share. But the company that invented the consumer VR market is now running its marquee hardware event around devices that look like sunglasses and weigh less than 70 grams.
