Khronos Releases OpenXR Spatial Containers, Giving XR Developers a Unified Multitasking Standard

In brief

The Khronos Group announced 2 new OpenXR extensions on October 19, 2026 that define how XR applications share a spatial environment, the first cross-platform standard for this class of problem. Google confirmed Android XR will implement the extensions; Meta, PICO, Unity, Varjo, and Godot voiced support on the day of the announcement. The spec closes a gap that has forced every major XR platform to solve spatial multitasking independently, each in its own proprietary way.

The Announcement

The Khronos Group detailed the spatial containers extensions on October 19, the result of 18 months of collaboration across runtime vendors, engine teams, and hardware makers. 2 extensions do the work: XR_EXT_spatial_container creates and manages containers, and XR_EXT_spatial_container_self_rendering lets apps render into them using OpenXR composition layers. Both were ratified in the OpenXR registry with the 1.1.63 release on September 1, with sample code published on the OpenXR GitHub repository.

The extensions address a problem that's been sharpening since multi-app XR environments became commercially real. Every platform has built its own windowing model. The spatial containers standard gives developers a single API to target across devices.

How Spatial Containers Work

A spatial container is a system-managed space where an application displays its content: a window with volume, placed in the room by the system rather than hardcoded to the frame. The user can reposition it, and it can follow the user when they walk.

Apps can run in 2 modes. Bounded mode places the app alongside other apps in a shared environment, sized for multitasking. Immersive mode expands it to full screen, the traditional single-app XR experience. Apps can request a transition between the 2 modes at runtime; the runtime decides whether to grant it.

The critical design choice is that the system controls container placement, visibility, and input focus, not the application. An app can't assume it owns the full frame. Visibility and focus arrive as per-container events, which forces developers to write for a world where their app is 1 of several running at once.

Who's Committed

Google gave the strongest commitment, confirming Android XR will implement the extensions. Jared Finder, a Google engineer on the Android XR team, said the company is "excited to bring Spatial Container support to Android XR," adding that it believes in "supporting open standards like OpenXR precisely because it enables developers to maximize their reach."

Meta voiced support through Nikita Lutsenko, who said "Spatial Container APIs bring this multi-application model to OpenXR, giving developers common, interoperable building blocks." PICO, Unity, Varjo, and Collabora are among the other contributors who backed the specification.

On the engine side, Godot has committed to add support. Its XR team welcomed the specification and said spatial containers will land in an upcoming release, extending the OpenXR work its maintainers, including Android platform maintainer Fredia Huya-Kouadio, have led.

The Gap This Closes

Before spatial containers, running multiple XR apps side by side required platform-specific engineering. On Meta Quest, only 1 spatial app can run at a time, alongside system-level 2D elements like the dashboard and browser. Apple Vision Pro has had its own Shared Space multitasking since 2024, but it runs on proprietary APIs. Apple hasn't adopted OpenXR.

The new standard gives the rest of the OpenXR ecosystem a path to comparable multitasking without each platform building a separate model. No XR headset has shipped a runtime implementation yet. Khronos expects rollouts to begin across the ecosystem through the remainder of 2026.
