Apple's Spatial Computing Retreat: What the Vision Pro's Fall Tells the Industry

The Headset That Didn't Land

Apple launched the Vision Pro in February 2024 with a $3,499 price tag and a new product category it called "spatial computing." The promise was substantial: a wearable computer that blended digital content into the physical world at high fidelity.

The market didn't follow.

By October 2025, Apple had refreshed the device with an M5 chip, a Dual Knit Band designed to redistribute the headset's 1.3-pound weight, and a visionOS 26 software update adding AI-powered widgets and Apple Intelligence features. The price held at $3,499. According to reporting from MacRumors, the refresh failed to revitalize consumer demand, with return rates exceeding those of any other modern Apple product.

Total lifetime sales came in at roughly 600,000 units, according to estimates cited across industry reporting, including streamlinefeed.co.ke and wccftech. (Some earlier analyst estimates placed the figure below 500,000 through late 2024; the higher figure reflects additional sales through the M5 period.) For context, Apple sells that many iPhones in roughly 48 hours.

The Team Gets Reassigned

By April 2026, MacRumors and other outlets reported that Apple had stopped active work on next-generation Vision Pro hardware and was redistributing the Vision Products Group. Former team members reportedly moved to other Apple divisions, with several now working on Siri. Vision Pro chief Mike Rockwell, according to MacRumors, had been leading the Siri team since March 2025, months before the M5 refresh even shipped.

In August 2026, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman and MacRumors reported that Apple laid off at least 60 employees from the Vision Products Group, with some estimates reaching approximately 100 total cuts. The gaming development team was largely shut down. The immersive video content team was also affected.

Apple has not officially confirmed that the Vision Pro has been discontinued. The M5 model remains on sale. But the engineering pipeline behind it, according to multiple reports, has effectively gone dark.

What Got Cancelled

The retreat goes deeper than a product refresh delay. Gurman reported in his Power On newsletter (May 31, 2026) that Apple CEO John Ternus signed off on canceling a second-generation Vision Pro. Apple reportedly shelved a near-term cheaper "Vision Air" model, per Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, though the timeline is disputed. A full replacement headset isn't expected before late 2028 at the earliest, per that reporting.

The reported shelving of Vision Air is particularly telling. It suggests Apple didn't just fail to sell the flagship, it concluded the whole form factor can't reach the mass market at any near-term price point.

The Pivot to Glasses

Apple's next spatial computing bet is reportedly something far smaller. Bloomberg's Gurman reported that Apple reportedly plans to launch its first smart glasses around late 2027, after an earlier 2026 unveiling was reportedly pushed back due to challenges refining visual AI features. The product carries internal codename N50.

These won't be AR glasses in the Vision Pro sense. Per reporting from Macworld and next.reality.news, the first-generation device will carry cameras, microphones, and speakers. It will lean on an enhanced Siri to process context from the wearer's environment, much like Meta's Ray-Ban smart glasses, which launched in 2023 and reportedly sold several million units by 2025. There's no integrated display planned for the initial model.

Price estimates from idevice.com place the glasses in the $200-$500 range. That's a different market entirely.

The Software Stays Alive, For Now

Apple's WWDC 2026 keynote included visionOS 27, a meaningful software update for the Vision Pro's existing user base. The release brought a redesigned Siri appearing as a 3D spatial orb, with Visual Intelligence letting users ask questions about objects visible through the headset's passthrough cameras in real time. Apple also introduced a new Thórsmörk environment, placing wearers in Iceland's mountain highlands with Northern Lights views and positional audio.

The developer story got more serious too. RealityKit gained cloth simulation, 3D Gaussian splatting, and a Spatial Accessories Framework for third-party tracked hardware. Apple added a Foveated Streaming framework to push OpenXR content from Windows PCs over Wi-Fi.

The combination is coherent: Apple is keeping the platform credible for developers while the hardware roadmap sits on ice.

What This Signals for the Industry

The Vision Pro's arc maps cleanly onto the broader headset story. Meta's Quest line found a market at $300-$500. Microsoft wound down its HoloLens enterprise ambitions. Google killed its consumer Glass effort a decade ago and shelved enterprise Glass not long after. The pattern is consistent: high-fidelity, high-weight, high-price headsets don't find mass adoption.

Apple's move toward smart glasses acknowledges what Meta figured out earlier: the wearable that wins is the one people wear in public without thinking about it. Cameras and speakers in a $300 frame go on anyone's face. A 1.3-pound visor at $3,499 doesn't leave the desk.

The Siri angle matters here. The agentic Siri that showed up in visionOS 27 is the same capability core that will power the N50 glasses. Apple spent three years and enormous engineering effort building a spatial computing stack, then watched where the AI capabilities were actually useful. The answer appears to be ambient, always-on, lightweight context.

That's a significantly smaller, and potentially far larger, category.
