How Do You Sell a Product That Only Proves Itself in an Emergency?
Some products have a demo problem that runs deeper than logistics: the proof only happens when everything has already gone wrong. Fire safety distributors know this better than most.

There's a category of product that creates a specific sales problem. The product works exactly as promised. The customer needs it.
The sales team knows it cold. But the only scenario in which the product proves its value is the one nobody wants to experience.
Think about what that does to a sales conversation. You're selling something that, ideally, sits unused in a warehouse for five years. Your buyers are evaluating it under the assumption that it'll never be deployed.
They can't test it under the conditions that matter. They have to trust the spec, trust the rep, and trust a product they'll only truly understand if something goes wrong.
That describes most of fire safety equipment. It describes industrial protection equipment, emergency response tools, and backup systems of every kind. And it creates a sales gap that spec sheets can't close.
The gap has a name: the demo problem. For sellers in this category, closing it isn't a nice-to-have. It's the job.
What the rep knows that the buyer can't see
MES Life Safety is a Detroit-based distributor of firefighting and first responder equipment. They serve fire departments, law enforcement agencies, and industrial facilities across the country. Their catalog covers turnout gear, thermal imaging cameras, gas detection systems, rescue tools, and suppression equipment.
One of their key product lines is the Bridgehill fire blanket, a reusable suppression blanket designed to cover a burning vehicle, cut off the oxygen supply, and contain the fire. MES distributes multiple versions: car blankets, XL variants that cover SUVs and trucks, and industrial sizes for forklifts and warehouse equipment.
The blanket is reusable up to 30 times under standard conditions. It has become especially relevant as electric vehicles show up in greater numbers on fleet lots, in parking garages, and in warehouse facilities, because lithium-ion battery fires behave differently than gasoline fires and don't respond the same way to water-based suppression.
Their sales team is largely made up of retired firefighters. They understand this equipment the way you understand something you've actually used. As Michael Womack of MES put it, their reps "do demos almost every day. They're in the field teaching their customers how to use this. But for prospects, it's just showing them what the tool can do."
That sentence captures the problem. The reps are fluent. The prospects aren't.
And the gap between fluency and comprehension, when you're selling emergency equipment, is a gap that costs deals.
The first impression has to land visually. A rep talking through a spec sheet, however knowledgeable, is still asking the buyer to imagine something they've never seen. For a product that only proves itself when a vehicle is on fire, imagination isn't enough.
What 3D video does that a live demo can't
You can't set a truck on fire in a sales meeting. You can't demonstrate a lithium battery suppression scenario in a convention hall. Real footage of actual fires is rare, often proprietary, and carries the kind of liability and optics that make marketing teams nervous.
What MES had in many cases was a box, a spec sheet, and the expertise of their team.
Working with Mainstay Digital, MES built a 3D animated video for the Bridgehill Car Pro X. The video runs through a full scenario: a vehicle on a highway, a fire, a crew deploying the blanket, the fire contained. Then it breaks down the product itself, showing the center stripe, the handles, the eyelet positions, and the reusability spec in a photorealistic 3D environment.
The production started with the physical product. Because the Bridgehill blanket isn't a machined component with a standard CAD file, Mainstay's team worked from the actual blanket in hand. As Steve Palaia of Mainstay described: "That's what we did with the blanket. It's sitting in front of me. We got it in so we could take a look at it and make sure we understood all the dimensions."
That process matters. The blanket in the video looks like the blanket in the box. The buyer sees exactly what they're buying, deployed in the scenario they're actually preparing for.
One product, two completely different buyers
Here's where the MES approach gets interesting beyond the obvious.
The Bridgehill blanket serves 2 distinct buyer populations. Fire departments and first responders who deploy the blanket themselves in an emergency. And industrial facilities, warehouses, and parking garages that keep blankets on hand with the understanding that a firefighter will arrive and deploy one when something goes wrong.
Those are different buyers. They have different contexts, different concerns, and different reasons to purchase.
A fire department buyer is thinking about deployment technique and the speed of suppression. A warehouse operations buyer is thinking about inventory, liability, and what happens when the EV charging station in Bay 4 catches fire at 2 in the morning.
The same product. Two separate conversations.
Womack explained the logic directly: "For the forklift, for the pallet, that's just to get them to buy the blanket. But they can't deploy it themselves. It's the firefighter who gets there and deploys it."
So the first video targets fire departments. The next one in the queue swaps the highway for a warehouse, the car for a forklift, and the messaging toward industrial procurement. The 3D environment gets rebuilt for the new context.
The product stays the same. The audience sees their world.
That's the real value of building from 3D rather than staging a physical shoot. The asset compounds. A new version is a new request, not a new production from scratch.
The blanket model, the behavior, the product callouts: all of it carries forward. MES also has rescue tool videos in the pipeline, including content for Hurst tools used to extract people from damaged vehicles. A 3D video of a spreader cutting open a car door conveys in 30 seconds what a written spec can't.
The EV era is making the demo problem worse
There's a broader dynamic underneath this.
Electric vehicles are appearing in greater numbers in the places industrial buyers manage: parking structures, fleet lots, warehouse charging stations, company vehicle pools. Lithium-ion battery chemistry creates a fire class that a lot of facility operators haven't had to deal with before. The protocols are newer, less standardized, and harder to communicate to buyers who are learning the risk at the same time they're evaluating a solution.
MES renamed from MES Fire to MES Life Safety specifically because their market is expanding. Fire departments are one channel. Industrial facilities, law enforcement, EV infrastructure, and commercial real estate are others.
Each requires a different entry point into the same conversation: what happens when something goes wrong, and what does your team have on hand when it does?
The video has to do multiple things at once. Explain the hazard. Show the product working. Give the buyer language to carry into their own internal conversation with operations or procurement or risk management.
It's an education asset and a sales tool, not just a demo.
The content library is the sales infrastructure
What MES is building is a content library that can travel.
A video plays on a trade show screen, on a rep's laptop in a fire station, on a department's internal review call, and in a LinkedIn post targeting fleet managers. The same 3D asset, cut for the right context, deployed without anyone having to drag equipment into a parking lot to prove a point.
Womack's reaction after reviewing the final storyboard: "You guys really do a good job. Like the whole 3D effect and everything. That's the part that really gets me pumped up."
That response points at something real. The video gives the sales team something to hand off that does the work they've been doing by conversation alone for years. The rep's expertise, externalized into a format a prospect can watch before the meeting, during the meeting, and after the meeting when they're explaining the decision to someone else.
The forklift video, the rescue tool content, the thermal imaging camera work: MES has a roadmap of products that still need this treatment. This is a working relationship in progress. The direction is clear.
For any distributor whose product is purchased before an event and deployed during one, the demo problem is structural. The buyer is purchasing on trust and on visualization.
Getting that visualization right, building a library that travels, doing it modularly so each new product or audience is an iteration: that's the work. The spec sheet is already right. The question is whether the buyer can see it.
