Marketing the Part That Disappears Into the Machine
When a product's job is to be invisible, the marketing has to make it visible. Here's what that looks like in practice.

There's a category of industrial product where success leaves no trace. The thing works, and because it works, you never hear about it. No failure event. No corrosion report. No audit finding. The equipment downstream runs clean, the system holds, and the component quietly does its job until it gets swapped out on schedule.
That's the position filtration companies occupy. And it's a genuinely strange marketing problem.
The filter doesn't get credit when the aircraft lands safely. The buyer doesn't think about the coalescer when the fuel test comes back clean. The product earns its place in a system by making itself irrelevant to the people who depend on it.
That's the design intent. It's also the reason a spec sheet and a photograph don't do much to help a buyer understand why one filter is worth choosing over another.
This category sticks with me because the problem isn't unique to filtration. A lot of industrial components work exactly this way: the value is in what doesn't happen, the product disappears into a larger system, and the buyer never sees it do its job.
The visual story is essentially zero. You're asking someone to trust engineering they can't observe.
The answer, in our experience, is that you have to show the invisible work.
Aviation fuel doesn't forgive
Facet has been in filtration since 1943. The company is one of only 3 manufacturers worldwide qualified by the Energy Institute to supply aviation filters and filtration systems. Their products run from refinery output through diesel recirculation skids to bulk fueling equipment at remote airfields.
The stakes in aviation fueling aren't abstract: contaminated fuel is a safety issue, not a quality issue. The margins for error are tight, and buyers know it.
That makes the specification process rigorous. Engineers reviewing a coalescer-filter know what ratings they need, and they verify them. What a spec sheet can't do is show the internal geometry, the flow path, how the contaminant-capture mechanism actually works.
A buyer reviewing a cylinder with dimensions and ratings on paper has to infer the design intelligence behind it. Some do. Most would rather see it.
Facet's marketing team, led by Jess Montgomery, came to us to build a visual library of 3D animation videos and photorealistic product renders. The source material is Facet's CAD files. The output goes into product launch campaigns and onto LinkedIn.
The process runs through close collaboration with both their marketing and engineering teams, which matters more than it sounds.
Montgomery put it plainly: "We have a very vocal sales team, so if they find even a minor issue with anything, I'll be sure to hear about it."
That pressure is actually useful. When the sales team scrutinizes every technical detail in a video, the content that ships carries real credibility with the engineers and procurement teams who watch it. A filter video that has survived the Facet sales team is a filter video that's earned its audience.
The 30-year claim that got caught
The most instructive moment in the Facet engagement had nothing to do with rendering.
During production of one of the FACIF animation videos, a claim surfaced in the script. Facet's team had been using certain language about how much lighter one of their aviation filters was compared to alternatives. The phrase had been in sales materials for roughly 30 years.
Nobody had checked the math recently.
Montgomery caught it in review.
"None of them are 75% lighter," she said. "So it's like, we've been saying this for 30 years and it's entirely wrong. Should have checked sooner."
The correction was made before the video launched. Production-grade visual content surfaces this kind of thing in a way that brochures and slide decks don't. When you're building a storyboard frame by frame, deciding exactly what to show and exactly what to say, vague language gets flagged.
Claims get examined. The production process itself functions as an accuracy pass.
That's a side effect that doesn't appear anywhere in a description of what this service does. It also doesn't appear in any spec sheet for a filter. But it's real, and it matters.
When the product gives you nothing to work with
Not every Facet product is easy to make visually interesting.
The CIF is a large vessel with visible external components. It has real presence on screen. You can rotate it, animate the installation, show the internal structure.
It's a satisfying subject for 3D animation because it rewards that treatment.
Coalescing plates are a different problem. Thin, repetitive, physically unspectacular. During production of the coalescing plates video, we noted internally that the product gave the team less to work with: there's less opportunity for spinning around, installation sequences, and full 3D treatment than a vessel like the CIF. Montgomery agreed: "We were struggling to even provide feedback on this one."
The constraint pushed the production team toward X-ray style views and tight detail shots, trying to make the internal performance of the filter legible rather than just showing the exterior. It's a harder visual problem. You can't resolve it by rotating a flat plate in 3D and calling it a product video.
You have to find a way to show what the thing does, not just what it looks like.
The Diesel Skid was a different story. When those renders came back, Montgomery said she was surprised by how they turned out: "I thought they looked awesome. I was surprised, honestly." Her graphic designer had separately taken the bulk fueling skid renders and mocked up a trade show banner. Montgomery reported it looked the way it needed to.
That's the practical payoff of rendering at 4K and higher resolution. The use cases aren't always predictable. A render that works on a webpage may need to fill a banner at 10 feet wide at a trade show.
When the source file is clean and the resolution is right, the same asset goes directly from the platform into trade show collateral, sales decks, and LinkedIn without degradation. The content compounds.
Running a launch campaign through an acquisition
The Mainstay engagement with Facet ran through a complicated period. In early 2026, Donaldson announced its intent to acquire Facet for approximately $820 million. The deal closed in May 2026.
For Facet's marketing team, that meant managing an active product launch campaign, with several videos in production and more in queue, while waiting on guidance about when a rebrand would happen. Some videos were held from publishing because the logo on them might change. Others had to be produced knowing they'd need a logo swap before going live.
Montgomery described the situation: "There's too many factors impacting it. Because we have to do a rebrand at some point and we will probably do that rebrand before we can launch the diesel stuff."
The production pipeline stayed active through all of it. A logo swap on an animation is a bounded problem. Voiceover that's been approved doesn't change because the parent company does.
The visual assets keep accumulating value even when they're sitting in queue waiting on timing they don't control. That's something worth understanding about this kind of content investment.
An individual render of the diesel recirculation skid is usable whether or not the rebrand has happened, whether or not the campaign is ready to launch, whether or not the sales team has the supporting collateral yet. Each piece compounds into the library. When the timing is finally right, the stack is ready.
The thing that doesn't show up in the photos
Facet's situation isn't unusual. A lot of industrial markets look like this: technically differentiated products, sophisticated buyers, long sales cycles, and marketing that has historically relied on spec sheets and whatever product photos were taken at the last booth setup.
The constraint that kept it that way for decades was production cost and lead time. 3D production was slow and expensive, and the CAD files that engineering already maintained weren't treated as a marketing asset. That's changed.
The same files that document the internal geometry of a coalescing plate become the source for an animation that shows how it works. The same render that goes on the product page can fill a trade show banner.
For companies that make products designed to disappear into a system, the story about how those products work has to be told some other way. The buyer can't observe the filter doing its job. They can't see the flow path or the capture mechanism or the reason the internal geometry matters.
They have to trust that it works before they've seen it work.
Video and photorealistic renders are the current best answer for closing that gap. They're not glamorous, and they don't substitute for the engineering. They let the engineering speak in a language buyers can actually use to make a decision.
For a product category built entirely on invisible performance, that's a real capability. It's one of the harder marketing problems to solve, and the companies solving it are the ones whose buyers don't have to take the quality on faith.
Facet's job is to give buyers the visual case for why their filter belongs in the system. That's what the library is for.
