You Can't Ship a Battery Cabinet to a Ballroom. So Bring It to Them
When the product is too large and too heavy to put in front of buyers, the question becomes: how do you make them feel like they're standing next to it anyway.

There's a specific kind of trade show problem that nobody talks about honestly. You make something real. Something that works. Something that weighs thousands of pounds and ships on a flatbed. And you're supposed to represent it with a fabric banner and a looping render on a 27-inch monitor.
I've seen this setup across a lot of industrial booths. It's a physics problem. The product can't be there. So the buyer never really understands it.
The companies that figure this out first aren't just solving a marketing problem. They're building a different kind of sales infrastructure. And a battery energy storage company out of Peoria, Illinois gave us one of the clearest examples I've seen of what that actually looks like in practice.
The gap between what you make and what you can show
ELM Microgrid makes battery energy storage systems for utilities, schools, hospitals, fleet operators, and industrial facilities. Their CMG series targets commercial and institutional buyers. Their MG series handles larger utility and infrastructure deployments.
The use cases run from peak shaving and demand charge reduction to keeping a hospital's critical systems running during a grid outage.
It's serious hardware. Battery cabinets that don't fit in a Pelican case, a cargo van, or a hotel freight elevator. They start at 100 kW and the installations are permanent.
When a wastewater plant or a school district is evaluating one, they're not browsing. They're making a decision they'll live with for years.
ELM attends a range of shows, from large industry conferences like RE+ and DistribuTech down to regional hotel events where the audience is local utilities and facility managers. Kelly Stickelmaier, who runs marketing at ELM, put the core problem plainly: "We are starting to do a lot more smaller regional shows. And the problem is, we've got our little fabric back wall that travels."
The product can't come with it. So the booth communicates almost nothing about what the product actually is.
A photo doesn't convey scale. A render doesn't let a buyer understand the field controls, the way the cabinet doors open, or how the system connects to their switchgear. You can talk about it. You can hand someone a spec sheet. But none of that puts them in front of the machine.
Putting the product in the room anyway
We started with augmented reality. The CMG 125 is now a fully 3D model a buyer can scan via QR code and place in their own environment at true scale, no app required. Standing in a school gym, a warehouse, or a parking lot, they point their phone and see the unit positioned where it would actually go. They can rotate it. Open the cabinet doors. Walk around it in the room they're already standing in.
Adelaide Walker, who works with clients on deployment at Mainstay, described what this does at a show or a Zoom call: "A lot of our clients, it's like even microgrids, they're so big that you kind of have to see it in the warehouse or on site. And so this is a solution where you're on a Zoom call and somebody can open up and look at it. Or you're at a trade show and you're at a booth and you don't want to pay a huge shipping cost for it."
The AR model also embeds directly into ELM's website. Where a static image sat before, buyers can now rotate the CMG 125 from any angle in the browser and explore it without ever downloading anything.
That's the first layer. The second is what happens after the buyer starts exploring.
A sales tool the team can update themselves
On top of the same 3D model, we're building hotspot experiences. The CMG 125 becomes clickable: a buyer orbits the unit, selects a callout point, and gets detailed information on that specific feature, whether that's specs, images, or a short video. The experience can be structured as a guided tour or left open for a buyer to drive at their own pace.
What matters more than the format is what the team can do with it afterward. Steve Palaia from Mainstay demonstrated the platform on a call with ELM's team: "You guys can at any time update the copy, update the pictures, update the video. If you have a sales presentation, you could use completely different hotspots, the things that matter to that customer. Or if you have a particular client you're pitching, every single one of these callouts, you could tailor to their use case, why it's important to them."
For ELM's salespeople, the hotspot experience is a living sales tool. One version leads with peak shaving and demand charge management for a manufacturing plant. Another emphasizes backup resilience and grid outage protection for a hospital. A third focuses on EV fleet charging integration.
All built from the same 3D model. All editable by the sales team directly, without filing a change request.
The platform also tracks engagement. Over time, ELM can see which hotspots buyers are actually clicking, which tells you something no survey will. Palaia: "It lets you know what the most popular features were clicked on. So if everyone is really interested in the field site controls and monitoring, you just know that's a popular one."
Answering the buyer who doesn't know they're your buyer yet
The largest project still in progress is one ELM calls Industry Town. The concept is a clickable illustrated map of a fictional community, each building representing a real ELM customer segment: a school, a hospital, a community center, an emergency services station, a manufacturing facility, a utility substation, a fleet depot.
When a buyer clicks on the hospital, they see a short animated sequence showing how an ELM system integrates at that type of site: how the power flows from the grid to the battery, how the system responds to an outage, which ELM product fits the application. Then the map resets, ready for the next building.
Aaron Bowman, president of ELM, explained the thinking behind the design. Buyers often assume their situation is uniquely different from everyone else's. A wastewater plant operator assumes his energy needs don't look like a school district's.
A fleet manager assumes his peak-load problem is different from a hospital's. The map answers that before they have to ask. As Bowman put it: "You don't get different electrons."
The underlying physics is the same at every site. The animations and copy change by sector to reflect what matters in each context, but the underlying story, a battery system that isolates from grid failure and keeps critical facilities running, is identical. It's one sales tool that speaks to eight different buyers at once, and answers the question "does this apply to me?" before the sales call begins.
The penthouse play
There's a thread running through all of this that's worth naming separately. RE+, the large-scale clean energy conference held in Las Vegas every November, is a show ELM doesn't exhibit at. The booth costs are prohibitive at their current scale, and the floor traffic at an event that size tends toward tire-kickers.
Instead, ELM books private meeting rooms. Prospects schedule time with the team. The conversations are pre-qualified by definition.
This year, ELM added a penthouse suite at Palms Place for three nights of invitation-only events for dealers, clients, and strategic partners. We're producing the invitation video: elevator doors opening to reveal a microgrid in the penthouse, electricity moving through the scene, a Frank Sinatra-era Vegas atmosphere ending on the CMG unit.
The AR model is part of the plan for the event itself. The idea is to set up a phone at the penthouse so guests can place a full-scale CMG 125 on the terrace and take a photo next to it. When Kelly Stickelmaier described the idea to a colleague who'd been skeptical about AR, his reaction shifted the moment she told him: "You can take a selfie with it? Oh."
That reaction isn't trivial. Scale is the thing a spec sheet can't communicate. Putting a buyer next to a full-size representation of the product, in the room they're already standing in, changes the conversation in a way that a brochure doesn't.
What the physics problem teaches you about selling
Strip away the specific hardware and ELM's situation isn't unusual. Complex industrial equipment, sold to sophisticated buyers who evaluate slowly, in markets where physical demonstration almost never happens at the moment of consideration.
The traditional answer is a spec sheet, a render, and a sales engineer who knows the product cold. That works when you can get the right person in front of the right buyer at the right moment. It fails when the marketing materials have to do most of the work without a human in the room, which is most of the time.
The shift ELM is making is about giving buyers more ways to understand the product on their own terms before that conversation happens. An AR model a prospect scans at a booth. A hotspot experience a dealer pulls up on an iPad at a regional show. An interactive map a buyer finds on the website and clicks through to find their own industry.
Each of these does a different job. But they all answer the same question: how do you make a large, heavy battery cabinet comprehensible to someone who has never stood next to one?
The self-serve dimension matters almost as much as the 3D work itself. When ELM's marketing team can update a hotspot experience, create a version tailored to a specific prospect, or duplicate the CMG experience for a new configuration, the material stays current without routing every change through an agency. That's the difference between a one-time deliverable and a living sales asset. It's also the difference between a tool the sales team uses and a tool that sits on a server waiting for someone to remember it exists.
ELM and Mainstay are mid-rollout on this. Industry Town is still in progress. The RE+ invite is being finalized. The hotspot builder is newly in their hands. But the direction is clear: the companies that put their product in front of buyers, interactively, at the moment of consideration, at whatever scale and context the buyer needs, are building a different kind of advantage than those who can't.
The freight math never gets better. The shipping cost of a battery cabinet doesn't go down. What changes is whether the buyer needs to see the real thing to understand it, or whether you've already answered that question before they show up.
