Nobody Buys What They Can't Picture, Even at Stadium Scale
When a product is enormous, everywhere, and still invisible to the buyers who matter most, the gap you have to close is a picture problem.

A product can be enormous. It can be in 15 industries, on military flight lines, on naval dry docks, on hurricane staging grounds, on mining sites and oil platforms and telecom towers.
It can be genuinely excellent at all of it. And it can still be commercially invisible, because the buyers who would pay for it can't picture it.
That's the situation a lot of industrial companies are in, and they often don't name it that clearly. They say things like "we're a bit of a niche," or "it's complicated to explain," or "we rely on referrals." What they mean is that the gap between what they build and what a buyer can visualize on first contact is too wide for a brochure to close.
Size doesn't help. If anything, it makes the problem worse. A product at stadium scale is harder to represent in a photograph.
It doesn't fit on a table at a trade show. You can describe it, but description requires imagination, and imagination isn't something you can count on in a buying conversation.
The companies that solve this stop trying to describe it and start building something a buyer can navigate.
The steering wheel nobody sees
Big Top makes large fabric structures. Hangars. Sunshades for fighter jets. Disaster staging tents. Industrial warehouses. Semi-permanent structures for mining operations, marine dry-dock facilities, FEMA hurricane response.
The manufacturing facility in Perry, Florida, is more than 600 feet long. Ian Gilpatrick, who leads commercial efforts for the company, described what happens when someone walks in there for the first time: "You don't really understand the height, like, until you walk in and you're like, holy. It looks like an empty football stadium."
That physical scale doesn't travel. Not in a PDF. Not in a one-page description of what the company does. Not in a trade show booth where the structure itself can't be present.
Big Top serves 15 distinct end markets, which means the communication problem runs deeper than scale. It's about context. A military procurement officer evaluating a fighter jet sunshade needs to see something totally different from a port director considering a marine dry-dock cover, even if the underlying fabric structure is similar.
Gilpatrick put it plainly: "We're like the steering wheel in your car. It could be the best damn steering wheel you've ever seen in your life and nobody would ever know about it until you talk them through it."
That's an accurate description of the commercial situation for a lot of industrial manufacturers who are genuinely exceptional at something that doesn't come with a simple visual. The product is real. The capability is deep. The problem is the picture.
Building the map
The project Big Top and Mainstay have been building since early 2026 is called BT World. It's an animated, interactive world map showing every major end market Big Top serves, rendered as a photorealistic aerial environment with its structures placed into real scenes.
Click on military, and you see an air base: fighter jet sunshades, aircraft hangars, entry control structures, storage tents, dining facilities, each labeled and accurate to how Big Top deploys in those environments. Click on marine, and you get a shipyard.
Energy gets a field with transmission and distribution infrastructure. SLED gets road construction. Mining. Rail. Aerospace. Federal. Consumer and recreation. Commercial. All built out as environments, all with Big Top's structures in context.
The build is methodical. Each scene uses real aerial photography as a base, with Big Top's structures composited in at realistic scale and angle. Mainstay's designer Adelaide Walker described the process as a puzzle: finding an image with usable geometry, then placing structures the way they would actually appear in that environment.
Telecom sites look like telecom sites. Marine ports look like marine ports. The structures are always Big Top's. The settings are always accurate.
The experience layers. A top-level world map drills into end markets, which drill into use cases, which link to case studies, product details, and video. As of mid-2026, most of the first-level drill-downs are complete, with the use-case layer in progress.
What it produces is something Big Top didn't have before: a single navigable surface where any buyer, investor, or partner can find themselves on the map, click into their world, and immediately see how a fabric structure lives in that context.
What the board actually said
Big Top used BT World as the navigating piece through its end markets in a recent investor presentation. Gilpatrick's description of the reaction was direct: "They were extremely impressed. The board was extremely impressed with the presentation."
That reaction points to something worth sitting with. Companies that are genuinely good at complex, multi-market businesses face a structural communication problem with capital, not just with customers.
A written description of a company that covers fighter jet sunshades, hurricane staging areas, marine dry-dock facilities, and mining sites reads as complicated. The business isn't complicated. The picture was just missing.
An interactive experience that requires navigation can't be skimmed the way a document can. For a company whose story genuinely doesn't compress into text well, that distinction matters more than it might look like from the outside.
The specific problem the map is solving
Part of what makes the Big Top project worth paying attention to is the precision of the communication problem it's working on.
Big Top sells dozens of structure types to radically different industries. The buyer concerns in each of those industries are totally unlike each other.
A military procurement officer cares about something completely different from a mining operations manager or a port director. The sales pitch for a fighter jet sunshade isn't the same pitch as for a FEMA disaster staging tent.
This is common in industrial manufacturing and rarely named cleanly. The company has one product family with many applications.
Traditional marketing tries to cover all of them from one page, and the result speaks clearly to nobody. Or it picks one vertical and goes deep, and the other 14 markets never see themselves in what the company is showing.
Gilpatrick described what the interactive map lets them do instead: "It visually demonstrates a very difficult concept of end markets where for most people they're completely unfamiliar with this space."
The military section required the most thought in the design process. Linking structures to service branches didn't work, because all branches now use all platforms. The team organized military use cases around ground, air, and sea instead, so any buyer can find themselves regardless of branch.
Big Top has actual photographs of Easter services held inside their military structures, uniformed personnel gathered under canopy fabric with sunlight coming through. That kind of imagery anchors the experience in something real, not illustrated.
Still images in motion, and the layer still coming
Alongside BT World, Mainstay has been turning Big Top's still photographs into short video clips using the same technique we've used for other clients: take a still image of a structure in the field, add motion and environmental effects, and produce something that plays like footage without requiring a film crew. Gilpatrick was candid about why this mattered: "Like, we talk about it, but we can't display it very well. And we're still struggling with it." The motion clips give product photography a life it doesn't have as static assets.
The next phase of BT World adds a third layer. Once a visitor clicks into a use case inside a given end market, they reach a page with a scene of that specific application, a narrative, links to the company site, embedded video, and eventually testimonials and case studies.
A full editorial experience inside a navigable map. Big Top isn't finished. The use-case layer is still being built. The full circle from world map to product page to case study doesn't exist yet in one connected stream.
But the first layer is already working in the room.
The wider point
Strip away the specific product and the situation is one that a lot of industrial manufacturers share.
Deep capability across many markets. Those markets use different language, have different buyers, and evaluate suppliers against completely different criteria. One brochure or one website can't hold all of it without losing everyone.
The move Big Top is making is to treat end-market education as a design problem. The question shifts from "how do we explain what we do" to "how does each type of buyer find their version of what we do." An interactive map makes that possible without requiring 15 different websites or 15 different sales teams.
Big Top is also opening a manufacturing facility in Flower Mound, Texas, with a plant manager who started in June 2026. The Texas presence is part of intentional expansion. The company maintains a dense trade show calendar across military, defense, marine, and industrial events, and BT World is intended to become a centerpiece at those shows, adapted for environments where a browser is available.
The picture still has gaps. But the direction is clear, and for a company that has been difficult to picture, that's not a small thing.
